Case Studies

Shipley & Associates has played a significant role in a wide array of public affairs projects and as a consultant on a diverse list of legal actions. We have been effective in issues such as intellectual property, products liability, toxic torts, clergy sexual abuse, witness preparation, riparian rights, expert location, and venue research.

Environmental Class Action

Smokestack
  • Challenge
Our client, a large legal team, filed a lawsuit on behalf of a community contaminated by millions of pounds of toxins that had yet to be removed by a major industrial polluter. Many members of the community maintained loyalties to the defendant, however.
  • Approach
Our communications team designed a media relations and web-marketing program, met with leaders of influential statewide groups, developed a third-party advocacy strategy, and hosted a number of local town halls.
  • Results
Support for our clients’ legal action has increased, and new litigation has been filed by the local city government against the polluter in question.

Legal Advertising

Billboard
  • Challenge
Our client, a team of plaintiffs’ attorneys, needed to develop a large-scale asbestos and mesothelioma advertising program in a region already saturated with similar advertising and legal claims.
  • Approach
We created and coordinated a finely-targeted direct-mail drop, a low-cost print advertising campaign, and an innovative television advertising campaign to promote a series of health screenings.
  • Results
Our client generated a large volume of complainants, with a total advertising cost of just $450 per high-quality case.

Litigation Planning

Jury Box
  • Challenge
Our client, a prominent legal team, needed fast, detailed information on dozens of corporate defendants targeted for patent-infringement litigation.
  • Approach
Our business intelligence unit used public sources to assemble easy-to-use reports that included information on each defendant's products and services, corporate relationships, legal histories, bad practices, and more.
  • Results
Our client expanded the patent-infringement litigation quickly and at low cost, and subsequently reached settlement with the vast majority of new litigants.
